Shah Alam, Tuesday, December 13, 2011 — The Singapore LionsXII have been drawn to play Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) FC in the opening knockout round of the Malaysian FA Cup on February 18th. The Lions will travel to the 10,000-seater UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam for this opening fixture.
The Malaysian FA Cup is a knockout competition which was first played in 1990. The 2011 champions are Terengganu, a team Singapore will face in the Malaysia Super League (MSL). Selangor have won the FA Cup an unmatched five times.
The first and second rounds of the competition are single-leg knockout matches. The competition becomes a two-legged knockout for the quarter-final and semi-final stages before culminating in a single match final on May 19th at Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
UiTM FC are playing in the FAM League, the third tier of Malaysian football, and they finished seventh out of 11 teams in 2011 with a record of 5 wins, 9 draws and 6 losses.
The Singapore team is newly assembled but 13 out of the 29-man squad are from the Young Lions team that played in the 2011 S.League.
The MSL fixtures list is expected to be out on Wednesday, December 14th.
The Malaysia Cup, the third competition that the Singapore Lions will play in, will kick off on August 20th.
