Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia has signed on as the official airline partner of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) which tips off today in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In a sponsorship that will make a significant difference to the operating costs of the six new teams in the league, AirAsia will provide free flights to all their away games.
The six teams are based in Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Bandar Sri Begawan and Manila.
AirAsia’s group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said the airline’s support for ABL was a testament to its efforts in promoting sports in the Asean region.
“We believe that sports can play a crucial role in helping the diverse communities of Asean bond on a regional scale,” said Tony Fernandes, group chief executive officer of AirAsia. Fernandes is also the chairman of the ABL.

I took AirAsia once from Johore to Sabah, seems fine to me, there’s enough leg room for a small guy like me and there isn’t that much turbulence. Not that bad actually, value for the money u pay I suppose.
Oh wait if I can add this – there were a few times I really thought my AirAsia flight was going to crash and then the exit lights came on…
So for an adventure ride, choose AirAsia : )
And I think some of the ABL players will have trouble fitting into the AirAsia seats – legroom will definitely be a problem! Unless they fly the ABL teams on AirAsia X (where there is like a section of budget “business class” with extra legroom, bigger seats etc).

Jetstar is the best out of the three for me in terms of basic budget comfort and value-for-money but they’ve got limited destinations? Jetstar also flies from and into the main terminals.
Actually I noticed that Malaysia Airlines’ new pricing strategy has made it very competitive against AirAsia of late – and I often find that MAS has better timings than AirAsia for me.
Anyway, I usually take a mixture of flights around the ASEAN region – until the day budget airlines introduce some sort of ‘loyalty scheme’, I’ll always shop around before clicking ‘buy’!
