After posting a strong 44.61m at the Asian University Games last November, Brian See of National University of Singapore dominated the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic men’s discus throw event to win gold with 43.95m.
Chan Zhe Ying of National University of Singapore clinched the gold medal in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic men’s triple jump event with a distance of 14.40 metres, beating his school teammate Joseph Zhao by 0.29 metres.
The margin of victory was only 0.43s and 0.1s respectively as RP's Qabeel Khan and NUS's Celeste Goh secured close victories in the men's and women's 400m finals of the IVP Track and Field Championships.
Nabin Parajuli put in a steady run to strike gold in the IVP Men's 5000m event with a timing of 16:01.26.
Temasek Polytechnic (TP) duo Haanee Hamkah and Clara Goh sprinted to a 1-2 finish in the IVP women's 100m final, finishing in 12.66s and 12.75s respectively. In the men's final, NTU's Khairyll Amri came out tops in a race of high quality, with the top four all dipping below the 11-second barrier and all eight finalists finishing under 11.3s.
The 11-medal haul is the best tally for a Singapore athletics team at the biennial ASEAN University Games since the 2010 edition in Thailand, where our athletes clinched one gold, two silvers and nine bronzes.
Wang Liang Rong (SIM #9) had a game-high 28 points in SIM's 80-79 victory over NUS. However, NUS emerged as SUniG champions due to the three-way tie.
Ng Kian Hao (SIM #27) had a game-high 22 points but SIM's efforts fell short as NTU remained composed to take the game 61-58.
