ITE College Central, Thursday, June 11 , 2015 — Singapore thrashed the Philippines 17-2 in front of a full house to open their men’s floorball campaign on a high at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Like their female counterparts, the Singapore men’s floorball team are regarded as a regional powerhouse in the sport, and both teams are expected to sweep both golds. The men’s team played in front of a full house of 1,100 spectators.

From the start of the first period, it was obvious that it would be a physical match. What Philippines lacked in technical skills, they made up with aggressiveness and speed. However, Singapore’s regional dominance in the sport was evident when they scored the first goal through their captain, Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25). An assist to Amshar Amin (SIN #9) by R Suria (SIN #23) helped Singapore extend their lead to two goals.

Singapore found their third goal through Jenmark Sorreda (SIN #10) in the final few minutes of the first period. However, Philippines pulled one through Polo Mark (PHI #8). Singapore quickly responded through another goal by their captain, Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25) to end the first period with a 4-1 lead.

The Philippines reduced their score deficit to two at the start of the second period with a goal from Polo Mark (PHI #8).
Following that, Singapore had plenty of shots on goal, but an impressive showing by the Philippine keeper Beltran Jeremiah (PHI #1) denied the Singapore team of any goals. However, Singapore pressed forward and eventually found three more goals through Abdul Hafiz Zubir (SIN #29), Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25) and Kumaresa Pasupathy (SIN #33), who was assisted by his twin brother, Vignesa Pasupathy (SIN #34). This gave Singapore a five-goal lead ahead of Philippines.

Gary Wong (SIN #5), Amshar Amin (SIN #9) and Jenmark Sorreda (SIN #10) then added a goal in for the hosts to close out the second period 10-2 up.

In the final period, Singapore unleashed a barrage against Philippines with goals from Kumaresa Pasupathy (SIN #33), Amshar Amin (SIN #9), Brandon Cheong (SIN #99) and Rashid Jalaluddin (SIN #16) to extend Singapore’s lead to 12 goals. With fatigue setting in for the Filipinos, Singapore continued to dominate possession and eventually found three more goals through Rashid Jalaluddin (SIN #16), Syazni Ramlee (SIN #25) and Lim Jian Hong (SIN #70) to wrap up an emphatic 17–2 win against Philippines

Singapore Captain, Syazni Ramlee, felt that his team started off sloppy but did better in the second and third period. “The team didn’t give up. Even when they made a mistake, they kept their cool and redeemed themselves.”

Regarding their team’s preparation ahead of their match against Thailand, “We are going to treat every game like a final. We will show why we want to be champions.”

Singapore will face Thailand, whom had previously defeated Malaysia 6–2, tomorrow, June 12 at 4pm, ITE College Central.
