Buona Vista Community Club, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 — Tiong Bahru Team A beat Tanglin-Cairnhill 3-0 to win the Tanjong Pagar Cluster final in the Community Games table tennis tournament.

Tiong Bahru’s Robin Koh and Tan Teck Heng got the first point for their team when they beat the Lai Chee Ming and Bernard Dong 3-1 (11-9, 12-14, 15-13, 11-4).

The pair were closely matched through the first three games, with no more than two points separating them at the end of each game. Robin and Teck Heng won the first game 11-9 but Chee Ming and Bernard won the second game 14-12 after a long tussle.

Tied 1-1, Robin and Teck Heng came back to win the third game 15-13.

With no more than two points having separated them through the first three games, the fourth game turned out rather different. Robin and Teck Heng were comfortable 11-4 winners in the final game to win 3-1 as they secured the first point for Tiong Bahru.

Carmel Soon was next up for Tiong Bahru. She took the first game 11-5 against Yolanda Lim of Tanglin-Cairnhill but then yielded the next game 7-11 to her opponent. However, she recovered to sweep the next two games 11-3, 11-4 to win 3-1, and put Tiong Bahru up 2-0 in the overall score.

It was down to David She and Kwa Chin Chuan to secure the final point for Tiong Bahru. They edged past Tan Hock Hwa and Teo Heng Nghee of Tanglin-Cairnhill 11-9, 12-10 in two close first games. In the final game, they had more room to breathe, wrapping it up 11-5 to give Tiong Bahru their final point in a 3-0 overall victory.

In the match up for third, Tiong Bahru Team B beat Radin Mas CC 3-1 to finish third.

On hand to watch the final was Mr Chan Chun Sing, the acting minister for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.

“It’s good to see the residents coming down on a Tuesday night to support,” said Mr Chan.

The top two teams will go on to represent the Tanjong-Pagar Cluster in the Singapore National Games scheduled for September 1st to 9th.
