Monday, October 17, 2011 — The organisers of the upcoming Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore have come up with a different route and start time for the 10km category in the hope of reducing the congestion for the full marathon runners.

The major complaint from previous editions has been the congestion 42km runners face when they merge with the 21km and 10km participants towards the end.

The 10km run will now start earlier at 7.15pm. Last year, it started at 7.45pm. Also, the 10km runners will hit Nicoll Highway and not mix it up with the marathoners along East Coast Parkway.

However, all three routes, will still merge eventually along Republic Boulevard, a feature that has not changed from previous editions. Full marathoners will see the 21km and 10km runners when they hit the 39km mark. For 21km runners, this is their 18km mark while it is just before the 8km mark for 10km runners.

The shared portion of the route is shorter this year though. In 2010, marathoners ran the last 5km with 21km and 10km runners. In 2008, the full marathoners merged with the 21km runners at the 32km mark, then further merged with the 10km runners at the 39km mark. For 2011, the overlapping portion of the route is down to just 3km.

A runner averaging 6 min/km in the marathon will hit the 39km mark 3 hrs 54 min into his race. By that time, the 10km race would have been on for 1 hr 39 min.

The baggage collection point for all categories at the upcoming race will be at the War Memorial Park. In 2010, it was located at the F1 Pit Building for Full and Half Marathon participants. Some runners had complained that the walk from the finish line at the Padang to the F1 Pit Building was too long.

20,000 runners have signed up for the full marathon, the same numbers as 2010. The event will see a total of 65,000 runners across all race categories, 5,000 more than last year’s numbers.
