South Africa, Monday, June 28, 2010 — In the group stages, Chile had overshadowed their more illustrious South American rivals Brazil with their brand of fearless attacking style of football. However they were taught a harsh lesson by the five-time winners who crashed three goals past them without reply in a 3-0 victory.

Despite adopting a pragmatic approach nowadays, Dunga’s boys are a class apart in terms of technical ability and still capable of playing their Samba football at times. The Chileans managed to hold the Samba boys for 34 first half minutes before crumbling apart to concede two goals in three minutes that resulted in their downfall.

The first goal arrived via a Maicon outswinging corner as Brazil centre back Juan sent a towering header into the top left corner of the goal past Claudio Bravo. The second was a result of a brilliant link-up play between the Brazilian forwards. Robinho surged down the left flank before passing to Kaka just outside the box. The latter in return released Luis Fabiano with a superb through pass. Fabiano did the rest as he dribbled past Bravo to slot into the empty net.

Robinho wrapped things up for Brazil on the hour mark as he curled home a 20-yarder into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The Chileans however only showed their trademark attacking flair in fleeting moments with chief striker Humberto Suazo going close with two efforts. One was a great turn-and-shot saved by Julio Cesar while another effort was deflected onto the bar.

It was an eerily similar exit to their last World Cup 12 years ago where they lost to the same opponents 1-4 at the same stage of the competition. As for the Brazilians, they continue to live the dream of getting an unprecedented sixth World Cup trophy as they next take on Holland in a tantalizing clash in the quarter-finals.
