South Africa, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 — Germany set up a tantalizing second round clash with traditional rivals England after finishing top of Group D with a 1-0 win over Ghana.

Midfielder’s Mesut Ozil’s brilliant 59th minute left-foot belter was enough to see off the Ghanaians whose finishing was lacklustre throughout the match. Despite the defeat, Ghana managed to nick the crucial second spot behind Germany.

South Africa, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 — Despite bowing out of the tournament early, Australia made sure they went out with a bang as they beat Serbia 2-1 to finish third in the group.

Tim Cahill’s return was influential for the Socceroos as he managed to score the opener on the 69th win with a brilliant header from a Brett Emerton right-wing cross. Striker Brett Holman doubled the lead four minutes later with a long-range strike before Serbian forward Marko Pantelic reduced arrears with a tap-in on 84 minutes.

In the closing stages, Serbia had a penalty appeal waved away by the referee after Nemanja Vidic’s header flicked off the hand of Tim Cahill. If the penalty was awarded and duly scored by Serbia, it could have ensured their progress into the last 16 at the expense of Ghana. But it wasn’t to be.
