The Singapore national basketball squad lost 60-75 to the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) in the 17th Super Kung Sheung Cup played in December 2008.

Cesafi eventually played in the final against the Hong Kong National team and lost 61-100. The Cesafi squad is made up of the best university or collegiate players in Cebu.

Singapore finished last in the six-team event, losing their 5th/6th playoff game to Thailand 57-71. In their first game, they were demolished 102-43 by the Hong Kong national team.

In the match against the Filipinos, Singapore managed to keep it close in the first quarter and trailed by only two, but the Filipinos pulled away in the next quarter, holding Singapore to just nine points while scoring 16 to open up a nine-point lead at 31-22.

Singapore tried to come back in the second half, outscoring the Filipinos 25-23 in the third quarter, but the Cesafi team outshot them 21-13 in the fourth to wrap up the game.

The Filipinos eventually had four players in double figures.

Hong Wei Jian was Singapore’s best performer with 22 points while Pathman Matialakan was close with 18 points. Lim Wai Sian had seven 3-point attempts but sank none of them.

Overall, the Singapore team shot 44.4% from the field and 61.1% from the free throw line.

The Philippines won the SEA Games basketball gold in 2007 while Singapore decided not to send a team for the games.
