OCBC Arena, Tuesday, December 15, 2015 — Singapore’s netballers took their first victory of the Nations Cup after beating Chinese Taipei 71-20. The hosts had lost to Papua New Guinea (43-44) and Northern Ireland (35-46) in their first two matches.

Chinese Taipei, who were making their maiden appearance in the annual tournament, committed numerous basic errors, while Singapore capitalised on the turnovers to lead 39-9 at the end of the first half.

Singapore, led by veteran Lin Qingyi who earned her 100th cap, continued to dominate play and overpowered their opponents with their experience, limiting them to 20 goals at the final whistle.

“We played to our advantage which is to play a short, sharp game. We will need to bring that into tomorrow’s game,” Singapore’s coach Ruth Aitken commented on the team’s performance.

“Yasmin (Ho) played extremely well today. She was a shooting machine! Hopefully she can bring that into tomorrow’s game.” Ruth added. Yasmin scored 50 of Singapore’s 71 goals, with a 96 per cent accuracy.

“(However), we need to clean up our transition defence. Botswana play a very physical and fast game. We need to stop their quick turnovers,” commented Ruth, as she spoke about Singapore’s flaws.

Singapore will be facing Botswana tomorrow, December 16. They will be playing at the OCBC Arena, at 7pm. Singapore will need to beat Botswana to guarantee a spot in the third and-fourth placing match.
