Senja-Cashew Community Centre, Sunday, May 25, 2014 — Friends who used to play for different teams teamed up to represent Tampines West CSC in the 3-on-3 Women’s Basketball at the Community Games.
Zoe Eng, Jowilly Siew, Tung Kah Hui and Foo Mei Geok have been good friends since competing against each other during their secondary school years. Jowilly exclaimed, “We were enemies!”
Zoe, Jowilly and Kah Hui represented Temasek Polytechnic at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship earlier in January while Mei Geok is currently a student at Republic Polytechnic.
“Most of us are graduating students, so nowadays, when we have nothing to do, we’ll just meet up to play streetball,” said Zoe.
The 21-year-old added, “We joined the Community Games to have fun. It’s like a get-together. When we come here, we can see other teams from other zones and some of our other friends from others schools as well. I think it’s a good opportunity to interact with each other and socialise, and not only come here for basketball.”
Most notably, Zoe represented Singapore at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Zoe is currently awaiting entry to university at Singapore Institute of Management.
Jowilly said, “All of us stay in different areas, so coming together to play for the Community Games bonds us together under one community.”
“During regular school competitions, we usually stay with our teams and everyone disperses after the games. But over here, while we’re waiting for our next game and we have nothing to do, we tend to go around and mingle with our other friends,” added the 20-year-old.
The girls make it a point to meet and play together at least once weekly in their neighbourhood, despite their personal commitments.
