Swissotel The Stamford, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 — Joseph Schooling and Fu Mingtian won Singapore’s most prestigious sports accolade this evening at the 2012 Singapore Sports Awards.
Swimmer Joseph Schooling, 16, was named Sportsman of the Year while shuttler Fu Mingtian, 21, won the Sportswoman of the Year award.
The winners of the main awards were only announced this evening at the Awards ceremony after a secret ballot, unlike in previous years. The organisers will continue with this format for future ceremonies.
Swimmer Amanda Lim was named Sportsgirl of the Year while another swimmer, Quah Zheng Wen, picked up the Sportsboy of the Year accolade.
“The Singapore Sports Awards Selection Committee found ourselves having to make a difficult decision in choosing the finalists, and subsequently a winner, for each award category. But this is indeed a happy problem as it only means that Singapore has more and more talented athletes that we can be proud of,” said Teo Chee Hean, the deputy prime minister and president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.
The Singapore Sports Award is our country’s most prestigious recognition for athletes since its introduction in 1967.
