Queensway Secondary, Sunday, May 6, 2012 — Tanjong Pagar Smashers beat Queenstown CSC Team B 3-2 to record their first win in Group B of the Tanjong Pagar cluster for the Community Games Badminton tournament.
Tanjong Pagar finish in second place with the top spot going to Tanglin-Cairnhill CSC who won both their matches 5-0. Queenstown lay in third place with two losses.
At the start, it was Queenstown who had the upperhand when they were awarded a walkover in the Men’s Singles match. They then increased their lead when Lai Gim Choy and Lee Man Ting beat Tanjong Pagar’s Sumarseno and Susi Mediani 2-0 (21-9, 21-6) in the Mixed Doubles category.
However, the tide soon began to turn against Queenstown in the Men’s Doubles Masters match. Kong Weng Kai and David Seow put up a good fight against Tanjong Pagar’s Chan Weng Shi and Tan Kiam Hock but eventually conceded to the duo 2-0 (21-5, 21-4).
Tanjong Pagar’s Kok Wai Han levelled the odds for her team when she beat Queenstown’s Zheng Yu 2-0 (21-8, 21-9) in the Women’s Singles match.
In the decider, Tanjong Pagar’s Tan Song Chuan and Tay Kwee Sim faced off with Queenstown’s Suliman Bin Taib and Eric Lee in the Men’s Doubles match. The spirited Queenstown duo tried to outplay their opponents but were unsuccessful as Tanjong Pagar eventually won 2-0 (21-12, 21-13).
After the match, Queenstown CSC Vice-Chairman Mr John Toh commented, “Actually, we had a chance to win,” he said in Mandarin. “It was a pity we made too many mistakes during the game. But (for people like Eric), this was their first time (competing). I feel that the players have given it their best and considering that the team only got together some time in March, the result they got is actually not bad.”
