Clementi Sports Hall, Sunday, January 30, 2011 — Novice fencers teamed up in the second weekend of the Novices Fencing Championships for team honours in yet another record setting weekend of fencing in Singapore. A total of 440 fencers competed in the individual events and 100 teams contested in the team events.

The team from Blade club overcame 23 other teams to snatch gold in the Men’s Epee Team event. Captain of the team Lin Weixiang, a 19-year-old graduate from Raffles Institution said: “To win this team competition for the second year running feels even more gratifying than the first! Our team trained really hard over the past few months to prepare for this as we know our competitors are improving by leaps and bounds. Our team spirit was amazing and that was the key to our success today.”

Other winners included Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Men’s Sabre team, the Z-Fencing club’s Women’s Foil team, the NUS A Men’s Foil team, the Pasir Ris Crest Secondary A team and Women’s Sabre team, and the YMCA Women’s Epee Team A.

Fencing Singapore’s Executive Committee member Anthony Tsang was impressed by the support and level of fencing displayed.

“It is clear to see that the sport of fencing has indeed picked up over the last few years and the huge level of interest from schools and clubs demonstrate the big strides the association has taken in promotion of the sport,” he said.
