Guangzhou, China, Saturday, November 20, 2010 — Singapore bowlers finally struck gold when Cherie Tan, Shayna Ng and Geraldine Ng rolled 3,917 pinfalls to win the women’s Trios event.

“The energy that we had as a team made the difference today. Our focus was to make every shot count, one at a time,” said Shayna Ng, who also won a silver in the women’s singles event.

South Korea were 68 pinfalls behind in second while China finished third. A second Singapore team of Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, New Hui Fen and Jazreel Tan finished 10th in the same event with 3,626 pinfalls.

“They just took one shot at a time and that was the key to bagging the Gold for Singapore,” said coach William Woo.

Singapore had trailed the South Koreans after the first day of action on Friday.

“I couldn’t tell what exactly was happening but I didn’t think much and just focused on my shot,” said Cherie Tan.

The Singaporean men did not finish in the medals for the Trios. Basil Low, Jason Yeong-Nathan and Remy Ong finished 13th with 3,693 pinfalls while Ng Tiac Pin, Benjamin Lim and Mark Wong were 19th with 3,620 pinfalls. South Korea won both the gold and silver with Qatar taking the bronze.

The only medal the Singapore men have won came in the doubles event. Jason Yeong-Nathan and Remy Ong finished second after the latter saw his game disintegrate with the gold medal in sight. A Malaysian pair eventually won gold.
