Bedok Sports Hall, Singapore, June 20, 2008 – Over 600 silat exponents are taking part in the annual National Pencak Silat Championship from June 29 to July 13. The Championship is an opportunity to discover the rising stars in Singapore's Silat scene and to give the public a chance to watch the veterans Saiedah Said and Razif Moklas test their skills against one another.

The contest will consist of three categories – Pre-Junior (12 to 14 years old), Junior (14 to 16 years old) and Senior (17 to 40 years old). Each category is then further divided into weight class as well as an Artistic Category for single, doubles and team events. The Singapore Silat Federation (SSF) is hoping this tournament will unearth Singapore's new talent, and channel these rising stars into the national elite training squads to prepare them for international competitions.

"We hope that this tournament will attract all lovers of Silat from around Singapore. We are always looking for ways to give Silat exponents the opportunity to display their skills in a competitive atmosphere. It is very encouraging to compete in front of a live audience and it gives you that extra edge to show your best, so we hope as many people as possible come down and support the event. This will be a vital part of their training in preparation for the upcoming international tournaments," said Mr Sheik Alau'ddin, Chief Executive Director of Singapore Silat Federation.

Tickets for the championship are $3 for children and $5 for adults for the preliminaries, and $5 for children and $10 for adults for the final. The Championship will be held at the Bedok Sports Hall and Silat Centre of Excellence.
