December 19, 2007 – Never let it be said that the Olympic spirit didn't burn brightly in Singapore this Christmas season – thanks to our National athletes and the Singapore National Olympic Council.

About 50 National team athletes and sports officials took part in the latest campaign – Giving is Winning – by the International Olympic Committee to spread Olympic idealism and help humanity at the same time. Giving is Winning calls on athletes around the world to donate their sportswear and gear to refugee camps run by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Only days after the end of the 24th South East Asian Games in Thailand, Team Singapore came out in force to promote Giving is Winning. Five hundred polo shirts, 200 track suits and 50 sports bags were packed by athletes from table tennis, swimming, rowing, shooting, fencing, softball, gymnastics and sailing in a heartfelt show of support for the IOC program.

Literally giving the shirts off their backs were our rising stars in gymnastics 16 year-old twins Nicole and Tabitha Tay, who were joined by shooting gold medallists Jonathon Koh and Jasmine Ser, both 17, as well as our local legends James Wong, Tan Paey Fern and Jing Junhong. The sportswear and gear donated in Singapore will arrive in Moldova in time for Christmas, courtesy of DHL, which is partnering with the SNOC for the local Giving is Winning campaign.

Ng Ser Miang, vice-president of the Singapore National Olympic Council, best described the Giving is Winning initiative when he said "it reminds the world that the Olympic Movement always has been as much a celebration of humanity as it has been about sports." For people living in refugee camps around the world, the Giving is Winning program says they have not been forgotten.

In early 2008, the SNOC and DHL plan to work with the Ministry of Education and the local schools to raise awareness of the program among school athletes. For more information on the Giving is Winning program, check out http://www.snoc.org.sg or http://www.olympics.org.
