Glasgow, Scotland, Saturday, August 24, 2013 – Following their opening victory against Papua New Guinea, Singapore went down 27–82 against England in their second game of the World Youth Championship.

Not fazed by their vastly experienced opponents, Singapore worked tirelessly to disrupt their play, force them to make errors and managed to break through their defence.

England led the first quarter 16–6 and went 41–11 up at the half. Alice Travis, the England Goal Shooter towered above Nicolette Gan and Yun Zhen Seah and caused some problems in the circle but their work rate remained high throughout the match as it did across the entire team who took to the court.

As coach Joanne Loo had said after their opening match, facing England was always going to be a very tough challenge but it was a chance to give more of the team some valuable court-time and experience playing against a world-class side.

“We started well, lost out focus midway through but finished strongly. We had some outstanding defending and this is great practice ahead of our next match against Barbados. They will be tougher than PNG so we need to be prepared,” said coach Loo.

Co-captain Hin Ann Koh was one of those solid defenders and she was happy with the way they played.

“That was exciting out there. What an opportunity for us to play such high level opposition. We wanted to simply improve on our performance when we played a friendly against them at the start of the year. We definitely achieved that so I am happy,” said Koh.

England wing attack Sophia Candappa reflected on her opposition’s performance. “We played them at the start of the year so knew their style of play. They challenged for every ball and didn’t make it easy for us but today we were prepared for them and gave a strong performance.”
