Bendemeer Secondary School, Tuesday, October 13, 2015 — The Singapore ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (SAPGOC) kickstarted several community outreach initiatives earlier today to mark a 50-day countdown to the upcoming 8th ASEAN Para Games.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Grace Fu, graced the event with Senior Minister of State at MCCY, Sim Ann. Team Singapore athletes such as national netballer Micky Lin and national kegler Jazreel Tan were present to show their support.

Fu said, “In about 50 days, Singapore will host the ASEAN Para Games for the first time. This is an extraordinary opportunity for all of us to experience the power of disability sport.

“Our athletes are training hard and ready to fly the Singapore flag high. Let’s all come together to support and celebrate our athletes as One Team Singapore.”

In the coming weeks, SAPGOC and Team Singapore para-athletes will be reaching out to more than 40 schools and conduct sports clinic on certain sports that are unique to the Games. The event serves to build interest among students on the upcoming Games and the sports involved.

An initiative, entitled “Gift-A-NILA”, was also launched to involve the community, and will see them sew and decorate mini heart-shaped cushions. These cushions will be attached to a Nila plush and given to the participating athletes and officials as a welcome pack during the Games.

Hosting more than 3,000 athletes and officials from the region, the 8th ASEAN Para Games will be held from December 3-9 and will be a befitting closure to the Republic’s SG50 celebrations.
