Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Sunday, June 7, 2015 — Singapore were beaten 0–39 by Thailand in the final to settle for silver in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games Rugby 7s tournament. Singapore had lost 5–31 to Thailand in the preliminaries.

Thailand started the gold medal game strongly, with Liamrat Uthumporn (#9) scoring the first try just moments after the game started to lead 5–0. Shortly after, Yusri Chitchanok (#7) scored another one (10–0).

Three minutes into the game, Singapore had a scoring opportunity, but lost it when the run was halted by Thailand.

Singapore had difficulty keeping the Thais at bay who were fast and had good footwork. The hosts fought their hearts out in defence, stopping the Thai attack time and again.

They held on for another six minutes before Thailand scored their third try. Liamrat Uthumporn (#9) kicked the ball forward and beat everyone to it to pick it up and score the try. Sawatnam Tidarat (#11) made the first conversion for the Thais to lead 17–0.

In the final play of the first half, Sawatnam (#11) found her way past Singapore’s defence despite being tackled twice in a row to score a try (22–0). Bunrak Butsaya (#10) converted successfully for a 24–0 lead by halftime.

Thailand were quick to extend their lead further in the second half with their fifth try of the game through Yusri (#7) (29–0). Singapore almost got themselves on the scoreboard when a player broke through a gap and found herself in a one-on-one situation. However, Thailand managed to keep Singapore scoreless.

Singapore’s captain, Samantha Teo said, “We hear the fans at the back of our heads, hear them cheering for us on attack or defence, cheering for us all the time. The Thais put up a wonderful performance against us.”
