Olympians Calvin Kang (Beijing 2008) and Gary Yeo (London 2012) will head an 18-strong* Singapore ASEAN University Games (AUG) track and field team.

The team boast the third biggest of the 14 teams that the Singapore University Sports Council (SUSC) are sending to the Games in Vientiane, Laos. (Both the men’s and women’s football teams have 20 athletes each.)

Calvin and Gary also comprise half of the 4x100m national record-holding team (the other two, Lee Cheng Wei and Muhammad Amirudin Jamal, are also on the AUG team).

The track and field competition at the AUG will run from 15-18 December. The schedule can be downloaded here.

*injuries forced the withdrawal of T. Piriyah and Dipna Lim-Prasad from the original team of 20

landdis su asean university games

Name: Landdis Su
University: Nanyang Technological University
Height: 1.85m
Weight: 87kg
Event: Discus
Personal Best: 41.00m (2012 SAA Track Series 5)
Aims: My aim for AUG is 43m, regardless of position because I am only working on my personal best. I have done a 43.7m during training but, because I’m usually too nervous during competition, I don’t perform that well. I hope that, this time around, I can overcome this and achieve a personal best. I believe that if my coach has faith in me, I shouldn’t doubt my own abilities either.

University: National University of Singapore
Height: 1.78m
Weight: 76kg
Event: Javelin
Personal Best: 55.19m (National Junior Record, 2009 National Juniors)
Aims: My PB was set 3 years ago, before national service, so I think a reasonable aim will be to further my season’s best of 51.78m. Of course, it’ll be awesome to further my PB during this meet. However my main aim for AUG is to get my legs into the throw and I believe the distance will come if everything clicks.

Personal Bests: 10.52sec (2012 Thailand Open), 39.58sec (National Record, 2012 Asian Grand Prix 2nd leg, Kanchannaburi, Thailand), NA
Aims: I would like to emulate my PB form from the recent Thai Open in November at AUG. I am aiming to run a PB and, though I have chronic tendinitis in my left achilles, I hope that the pain will not hinder my performance at the Games. This will be the last fight of the season 2012. I would love to end it strong in terms of times of 10.4sec and 39.4sec in the 100m and 4x100m respectively.

amiruddin asean university games

Name: Muhammad Amirudin Jamal
University: National University of Singapore
Height: 1.68m
Weight: 67kg

Personal Bests: 21.54sec (2012 Thailand Open), 39.58sec (National Record, 2012 Asian Grand Prix, 2nd leg, Kanchannaburi, Thailand)
Aims: Personally, I want to go to AUG and clock a 200m time close to my PB because there are some people who feel that the PB was a fluke and it’s important for me to show that it wasn’t a one-off thing. For the 4x100m, we plan to hit a good enough timing to qualify for the Southeast Asian Games (next year). It would be much less stressful for us if we can qualify early and focus on training and improving next year.

Aims: 54.5sec and a medal in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m respectively. I’ll be competing in my third and final AUG. I am looking forward to it and I’m confident in running good timings in both individual and relay events. The 400m hurdles is a relatively new event to me, but a medal is within reach and hopefully I can add it to the bronze I achieved in 2010. I will give my 110%.

colin tung asean university games

Name: Colin Tung
University: Nanyang Technological University
Height: 1.75m
Weight: 67kg
Events: 3000m steeplechase, 10,000m
Personal Bests: 10:03.40 (2012 Singapore Open), 35:20.85 (2012 National Under-23 and Open C’ships)
Aims: In my attempts to qualify for the AUG this year, I have also been trying to go sub-10 in the 3000m steeplechase. While I have qualified for the AUG, I haven’t been able to achieve the latter and that is what I am looking to do this Sunday in the race as well as getting the season-leading mark by a Singaporean (9:57.95 by Karthic Harish). Hopefully, that will also mean I am up amongst the top three guys competing for the medals too. The 10,000m’s only going to be my second one on track so I feel there’s a lot of room for improvement. I will definitely be going out for a PB. If it turns out to be a tactical race and I find myself still with the lead pack in the latter stages of the race, then maybe I can do something at the end. soh rui yong asean university games

Name: Soh Rui Yong
University: National University of Singapore
Height: 1.77m
Weight: 64kg
Events: 5000m, 10,000m
Personal Bests: 15:36.02 (2011 Singapore Open), 33:14.74 (2012 National Under-23 and Open C’ships)
Aims: I will be going for medals, rather than chasing fast times, as races in championships like these, where there are loads at stake, tend to be tactical and slow, as the one who pushes the pace will burn more energy and be left vulnerable in the late stages of the race. My main aim is to end Singapore’s medal drought in the 5000m. This will only be my second race over 10000m, so I’m not sure what I can do at the distance. I’ll just hang on to the leaders and try to snag a medal for that event as well. (Photo 18 © Les Tan/Red Sports)
