Jurong East Sports Hall, Saturday, September 8, 2012 — Yio Chu Kang CSC exploded in the second half of the game to beat Yew Tee CSC 42-20 to enter the final of Singapore National Games (SNG) netball tournament.

Yew Tee has been a traditional powerhouse in the Inter-Constituency Games netball tournament. Their team for SNG consisted of many players who were ex-national players and have represented Yew Tee CSC for many years.

On the other hand, Yio Chu Kang is a newly formed team with many players playing in the domestic Netball Super League.

Little separated the two teams in the first half. Yew Tee’s sharp shooter Chng Yen Sin, who only missed one shot in the quarter-final, was injured and did not make the starting lineup. Instead, Julia Tan and Serena Tan took care of the shooting end.

Despite the absence of Chng on court, Yew Tee were on par with Yio Chu Kang and the first quarter finished 7-7.

Yio Chu Kang started to find their momentum in spurts in the second quarter and managed to lead 16-12 at half time.

However, the second half was a completely different story for Yew Tee. Yew Tee were limited to just five and three goals in the third and fourth quarter respectively as Yio Chu Kang put on a tight, full-court defence as the Yew Tee shooters barely got their hands on the ball.

Chng came on for the third quarter, partnering Julia Tan for the shooting end of Yew Tee. However, the change did not pay off. Yio Chu Kang were in total control of the game as Jocelyn Ng led the attack. Yew Tee defenders could not stop Jocelyn from shooting consecutive goals.

By the end of the third quarter, Yio Chu Kang were leading 30-17 and the game was effectively over for Yew Tee.

“It is unexpected for us to come thus far as we are a newly formed team. We have only practiced together a few times before the start of the tournament,” said Yio Chu Kang’s captain Jacqueline Long.

Yew Tee’s Serena Tan has enjoyed the tournament thus far.

“It has been a tough journey for us. Our Member of Parliament has been very supportive of us and the community centre reimburses us such as parking fees,” commented Serena.

“My most memorable moment is the bonding with the team,” said Yew Tee player Nur Zahirah.
