Bishan Stadium, Tuesday, June 30, 2009 – Singapore’s long jumper Melissa Wu Qin Yu has won our first medal at the inaugural Asian Youth Games.

The 16-year-old Cedarian bagged the bronze medal with her 4.94m (+0.8 m/s) effort in the girls’ long jump event.

Melissa’s personal best distance of 4.99m was clocked at the National Inter-School Championships this year.

Melissa failed to make the podium in her other event, high jump, where she has a personal best jump of 1.58m. The high jump event was won by Chinese Taipei’s Wu Meng Chia at a height of 1.75m.

Fellow 16-year-old, Sean Lim Zi Qing, then added a second bronze medal to Singapore’s medal tally in the boys’ Pole Vault event.

Sean cleared a height of 4.30m and was tied with silver medallist Chi Chien-Hao of Chinese Taipei, but Sean lost on a count back.

Singapore’s sole representative in the girls’ 100m event, 16-year-old Liang Wei, clocked 12.91s to finish fourth in her heats and ninth overall.

The Singapore Sports School sprinter’s personal best is 12.50s, which she clocked in March this year.
