Myanmar, Monday, December 16, 2013 – The Singapore quartet of Muhammad Elfi Mustapa, Calvin Kang, Lee Cheng Wei and Muhammad Amirudin Jamal finished just 0.04 seconds behind gold medal winners Thailand in the 4x100m relay final at the 2013 Myanmar Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The Thais clocked 39.75 seconds while defending champions Indonesia were third in 40.15s.

This is the third 4x100m relay SEA Games silver in a row for Singapore. At the 2011 SEA Games, Singapore had a photo-finish with the Indonesians but were declared second.

In the marathon, Mok Ying Ren became the first Singapore man to win the SEA Games gold when he came home first in a time of 2 hours 28 minutes 35.13 seconds. Compatriot Ashley Liew was eighth out of nine runners with a 2:42:55 effort.

In the pole vault, Sean Lim Zi Qing of Singapore finished fifth with a 4.80m clearance. Compatriot Chan Sheng Yao was eight in a field of 10 with a 4.60m effort.

The gold medal went to Kreeta Sintawacheewa of Thailand who had a 5.15m clearance. Iskandar Alwi (5.10m) of Malaysia was second while Sompong Saombankuay (5.00m) of Thailand was third.

In the men’s discus final held the day before, defending champion James Wong of Singapore finished fifth out of seven competitors with a season’s best 50.82m. James has nine discus and one hammer SEA Games gold to his name.

Muhammad Irfan Shamshuddin won the gold with a 53.16m effort. Narong Benjaroon (52.45m) of Thailand was second while Hermanto Hermanto (51.96m) of Indonesia was third.
