Evans Road, Monday, August 17, 2015 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) came from behind twice to defeat Raffles Institution (RI) 21-10 to capture third place in the National C Division Rugby Championship.

RI led twice – they were up 5-0 at half time and 10-7 in the second half.

RI had beaten ACS(BR) 20-17 in the preliminary round.

ACS(BR) had finished fourth in the preliminary round group while RI were third and both teams qualified for the semi-finals. ACS(BR) lost 7-19 to St. Andrew’s Secondary in one semi-final while RI had gone down 3-7 to ACS (Independent) in the other.

ACS(BR) and RI both finished the C Division season with identical 3-4 win-loss records.

RI dominated and play was concentrated on the ACS(BR) side of the field for most of the first half. An unconverted try in the first half saw RI lead 5-0 at half time.

In the second half, ACS secured a converted try to take a 7-5 lead but RI fought back, with their forwards driving hard, and scored a try within five minutes of the restart to go ahead at 10-7. Unfortunately for RI, their conversion attempt hit the upright and they could not secure an extra two points.

In the last 10 minutes, ACS(BR) had two good runs down the left from which they scored and converted to go ahead 14-10, a lead they would not relinquish.

The ACS(BR) backs were fast and furious as RI defended fearlessly. In the last few minutes, ACS(BR) breached the RI defense after relentless phases in front of the RI posts. Another converted try saw them wrap up the 21-10 win and third place.
