Bukit Gombak Stadium, Tuesday, April 14, 2015 — Raffles Institution’s (RI) Shohib Marican (#156) completed a title sweep in the A Division boys’ 5000m final at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships, finishing with a timing of 16 minutes and 41.87 seconds.

The second year student at RI, who credits his win to his teachers, coaches and teammate Tan Chong Qi (#158). He said, “I’m quite happy that I managed to win both titles and I’m very happy to share the victory with my good friend, Chong Qi, who’s always been there for me.

“We’ve been training together for a very, very long time, and this is the first time that we’ve actually managed to compete with each other in the National Inter-School Championships. It’s good to be able to run together.”

The 18-year-old had also recently clinched a sweep of the A Division boys’ individual titles at the 56th National Schools Cross Country Championships.

The long-distance specialist, along with teammate Tan (#158), pulled away from the pack right from the start of the race. The pair eventually overtook the slower runners in the pack by at least 600m.

The defending champion eventually extended his lead in the final 800m, and Tan (#158) had to settle for the silver medal with a timing of 16:58.51.

Tan (#158) said, “It was quite expected that Shohib pulled away after a while, so I just tried my best to stick as close as I could.”

The 17-year-old added, “He (Shohib) is a motivation whenever I run. Shohib is a legend. The legendary Shohib.”

Finishing in third place was Victoria Junior College’s Matthew Zach Neo (#203) in 17:26.57.

Neo (#203) was running alongside teammate Paxton Hong (#204) and Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Leroi Lee (#226) throughout the race. In the final 100m, the trio were neck-and-neck in a sprint, but Neo’s (#203) longer strides gave him an edge over the other two. Hong (#204) and Lee (#226) eventually finished 0.42 and 0.74 seconds behind to settle for fourth and fifth places respectively.
