Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Friday, April 11, 2014 — Ow Yeong Wei Bin of Hwa Chong Institution clocked 51.76 seconds to take home the boys’ B Division 400m gold medal at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

Emani Satya of Victoria School finished second in 52.25 seconds, while Hariharan Elavarsu of Seng Kang Secondary came in third in 52.55 seconds.

Wei Bin commented, “I feel very happy and excited. Based on the semi-final results, the timings for the top four positions were very close, so I did not think I would come in first. I want to thank my teachers, my coaches, my parents, and everybody who has been supporting me the whole year.”

It was a new personal best for Wei Bin, who also won the 400m hurdles a day before on Thursday, April 10th. He is the first athlete since Tan Chay Chun in 1998 to do the 400-400 hurdles double in the B Division.

The B Division 400m record is 49.75s and was set by Singapore Sports School alumnus, Jamie Ross Coates, in 2008.

Wei Bin won the race from lane five. It was only the second time in ten years that this race was not clinched by a runner starting in lane four.
