Kang Yee Cher, 11, of Fuhua Primary, wins his 100m B-Boys final in 11.86. Yee Cher had set the meet record of 11.77 in the semi-finals. The American record for his age group (midget) is 11.64. Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 28, 2010 – The inter-primary track and field scene has seen an 18% drop in the number of student athletes taking part over two years.

In 2008, 2,536 student athletes from 97 schools took part in the 49th edition of the championships. This year, just over 2,000 students from 84 schools took to the track and field of Choa Chua Kang Stadium. There were over 2,300 student athletes from 89 schools in 2009. The number of students and schools taking part were announced publicly during the prize giving ceremony at the end of the meet.

For the first time, a 60m Hurdles event was introduced to replace the 80m Hurdles to provide a less intimidating start to hurdling for primary school student athletes aged 10 years and under in the D-Girls and D-Boys categories. The height of the hurdle was also reduced by 8cm to 60cm.

Sprint sensation Kang Yee Cher, 11, of Fuhua Primary, again lit up the championships with his record-breaking runs in the sprints. Yee Cher, if he had run in the C Division with lower secondary boys, would have placed second with his 100m timing of 11.86s.

Yee Cher again picked up the Joe David Trophy, given to the athlete who wins the most gold medals and breaks the most records. Yee Cher broke the 100m records twice and the 200m record once in the B-Boys category.

Yee Cher is hoping to enter the Singapore Sports School for his secondary studies.

A Seng Kang Primary runner break down after the race. She was the first to receive the baton in the 4x300m race but crossed too early into Lane 1, causing her team an automatic disqualification. The second runner for Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary followed along, ran out of her lane, then changed her mind when she realised it was a mistake. By then it was too late. Her team were also disqualified and she too dissolved into tears. (Photo 11 © Les Tan/Red Sports)
