Singapore, January 24, 2010 – The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee announced that they will award six scholarships to youth athletes from around the world, with one scholarship reserved for a Singaporean.

The scholarships will be presented to the six during the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in August 2010 and they will begin their new academic year at the Singapore Sports School in January 2011.

Application Criteria
13-15 years old in 2011 (Secondary 1)
6 scholarship awardees per summer YOG, one from each of the five continents and one from Singapore
Any one of the seven Olympic summer sports – Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Football, Golf, Sailing, Table Tennis

Frequently Asked Questions for Singapore Youth Olympic Scholarship

Applicants

Q1. How many scholarships are given out?
Six scholarships (one from each of the five continents and one from Singapore
will be given out).

Q2 .When are the scholarships given out?
They will be awarded in August 2010. Scholarship awardees will start Secondary
One on 3 January 2011.

Q3. Why are there only seven sports offered?
Sports offered are limited to Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Football, Golf,
Sailing and Table tennis to ensure quality training.

Q4. Can I choose where to train and study?
The scholarship will only be delivered at the Singapore Sports School where
high-level sports training and quality education are integrated. Some training
may be conducted outside of the school premises.

Q5. What is the environment in Singapore / Singapore Sports School like?

Q6. Will the scholarship cover regular flights back to my home country?
The scholarship covers a return economy class air ticket from Singapore to
scholar's country of origin upon completion of the first two years of study.

Q7. Does the scholarship come with allowances?
The scholarship will provide free hostel accommodation and meals. Scholars
who do not currently reside in Singapore will be given an allowance of S$3600
per annum.

Q8. Must I stay in the Singapore Sports School hostel?
Yes. However, scholarship awardees who have alternative accommodation in
Singapore can book out of the hostel on weekends.

Q9. What if I miss the application closing date?
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit by the closing date.

Q10. Can I submit my application directly to Sports School?
No. Individual applications must be submitted to respective National Olympic
Committee for endorsement.

Q11. What if I am not available for the academic and sports testing dates?
The dates have been set aside for the specific trials and interviews. We will
evaluate requests to change academic and sports testing dates on a case-by-
case basis.

Q12. Will I be reimbursed for my flight tickets and accommodations to
Singapore for the academic and sports testing?
You will be reimbursed for return economy class air tickets from your country of
origin to Singapore for you and one guardian. During the testing,
accommodations will be provided at the Sports School.

Q13. Must I be present at the award ceremony?
Yes. Successful scholars are strongly encouraged to be present at the award
ceremony.

Q14. Would I be reimbursed for my flight tickets and accommodations to
Singapore for the award ceremony?
You will be reimbursed for return economy class air tickets from your country of
origin to Singapore for you and one guardian.

Q1. What is the purpose of the scholarship?
The Singapore Youth Olympic Scholarship is Singapore's legacy for the first
Youth Olympic Games. This is in line with the International Olympic Committee's
objective to integrate sports and education through the Youth Olympic Games.

Q2. Can I nominate more than 5 applicants?
As the scholarship awards are limited, NOCs are encouraged to nominate a
maximum of five candidates.

Q3. Will the postage fee be reimbursed?
No. NOCs have to pay for any costs incurred in submitting the applications.

Q4. Can there be more than 1 scholarship holder per continent?
We are providing one scholarship per continent to encourage diversity. However,
the final selection will depend on the pool and quality of applicants.

Q5. Can scholars still represent their home country for overseas
competition?
Scholars can represent their home country for competitions at the scholar or
NOC’s own expense. Applications for leave from school will be assessed on a
case-by-case basis, subject to academic and training schedules.
