Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, March 25, 2019 — In Secondary One, she finished third in the C Division 200-metres final. In Secondary Two and Three, she improved to finish second for the same event.

This time, Bernice Liew of Nanyang Girls’ High School topped the B Division Girls’ 200m final at the 60th National Schools Track and Field Championships with a winning time of 26.02 seconds.

Following just a few strides behind were Thaarani D/O Sivakumar of Singapore Sports School and Choo Hui Xin of Cedar Girls’ Secondary, who secured spots on the podium with timings of 26.34s and 26.57s respectively.

Despite seizing gold, Bernice did not meet her expectations that she had set for this event.

“I actually wanted to hit my personal best,” the 16-year-old athlete said. “I wasn’t super disappointed, but maybe just a bit.”

Bernice had set her personal best during the Little Athletics Western Australia (LAWA) meet this year with a timing of 25.81s.

Nevertheless, she remained thankful for the win, especially since it came during what she would call a “tough season”.

“I feel very happy, and all the support I had helped me to get through this season. It was a tough one, with all the injuries and everything,” Bernice shared.

Sporting an injury on her lower back, Bernice found it difficult to push herself in training the way she used to do, and was worried that such may affect her performance in this season.

“During the race, I was just afraid that the competitors would catch up at the end as my endurance isn’t that good, making me quite scared during the last 50m,” she said. “But I decided since it was my last race of B Div, I may as well just go for my best.”

Holding the B Division girls’ 100m electronically-timed record of 12.37s clocked in last year’s final, Bernice hopes to break her personal best once again in the 100m final as the final day approaches.
