Bishan Stadium, Monday, 24 April, 2017 — Reuben Rainer Lee clocked a personal best in claiming his second-straight 200 metres title for Singapore Sports School at the 58th National Schools Track and Field Championships, while Grace Shani Anthony helped Raffles Girls School to a rare sprint gold.

Reuben dominated the field, scoring a relative straightforward win in 22.41 seconds, though still some way off ex-national sprinter Poh Seng Song’s divisional record at 21.88s that was set in 1999. Gerard Wirawan claimed the silver for St Joseph’s Institution (International) in 23.29 and Reuben’s schoolmate Mohamed Iskandar Shah the bronze with 23.50.

“My coach told me to keep it simple today, I wasn’t expecting this time,” said Reuben, who also won the 200 metres last year in the C boys. “Staying calm was important, I learned today that I’ve got to push myself and not depend on people around me.”

Grace earned RGS its first track gold medal and second overall in this year’s championships, after she outran Reuben’s schoolmate Diane Pragasam who had earlier won the 400-metre race. Grace finished third in that same event.

“She has been rather consistent since the start of these championships,” said Choo Boon Hwee, the teacher-in-charge of the RGS track team. “She’s been quite determined to win and to win in the best time possible.”

Jovyn Lim earlier helped RGS to its first gold medal at these championships in the C girls long jump, where she leaped 4.98 metres. Long jump is considered a field event.

Both Reuben and Grace later helped their schools qualify for the 4 by 100 metres relay final that will be held this Friday at the Sports Hub. Reuben also qualified fastest for the 100m final.
