Bishan Stadium, Friday, 21 April 2017 — Raffles Institution’s Yusuf Arsyad won his third-straight long jump gold, but fell agonisingly close to at least matching a 22-year divisional record.

The secondary four student jumped 6.75 metres — just four centimetres short of the 6.79 metres B boys championship record set by Tan Lin Keat in 1995, who was competing for Chinese High School. Hwa Chong Institution’s Tedd Toh placed second after he jumped 6.53 metres, ahead of Singapore Sports School’s Raeshon Loo who recorded 6.50 metres.

“It’s been a rough season because I just made a switch to the 100 meters four months ago and stopped high jump training,” Yusuf said. “I was a bit scared because I won last year as a secondary three student, so it would have been disappointing to have lost this year.”

This was Yusuf’s second gold in the B Division, adding to the C Division title he won two years ago. He qualified fifth for the 100 meters final to be held on April 28 at the Sports Hub after winning his semi-final Thursday in 11.60 seconds.

Heading into his final two jumps, he was just ahead of Raeshon on a count back after both had jumped 6.50 metres. Yusuf produced two superlative jumps, while Tedd produced one of his own to edge Raeshon to silver.

“It was a fairly good jump from Yusuf,” said RI jumps coach Ng Kean Mun.
