Anglican High School, Sunday, June 19, 2016 — Siglap dominated CCHMS Girls 17-5 to win the girls’ under-17 category at the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF) 3-on-3 Basketball tournament.

Siglap, comprising Jayne Chan, Clarice Tan, Carissa Chan, Choo Jie Ying, and Joanne Lim, also met CCHMS in Round 1 and won 13-9 then. They finished the tournament unbeaten in six games.

A total of 18 girls teams took part in the under-17 and u-15 categories. competition. The boys’ categories saw 71 teams take part.

3-on-3 Basketball is one of 11 sports making up the SYOF. The other sports are athletics, fencing, badminton, football 7s, rugby 7s, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball.

Said Jayne Chan, “Our toughest game was against Chung Cheng in the final. Their defense very aggressive.”

The Siglap players have known each other for some time, having played together for up to four years for some of them.

In the U-17 playoff for third place, Blazers 2 saw off Team Unknown 14-2.

Blazers 2, comprising Nurlinda, Crystal Yeow, and Ivie Lim, finished Round 1 with a 2-1 win-loss record to top a close group. They lost to CCHMS Girls by just a point (5-6) in the semi-finals.

Nurlinda said jokingly, “Our best game was today (in the 3rd/4th playoff) because I scored 9 points.” On a more serious note, she added, “We were scared after losing the semis.”

“But fear made us stronger,” chipped in teammate Ivie. “And we talked more in this game,” added Crystal.

The U-15 girls final saw Team Decent beat Nanyang Yellow 13-6.

Team Decent, made up of Jamie Chang, Lydia Ang, and Tiong Zhiwen, finished the competition with a perfect 5-0 win-loss record. The three players are also teammates on the North Vista B Division basketball team.
