National Stadium, Friday, April 29, 2016 — Elizabeth-Ann Tan of Nanyang Girls’ High (NYGH) emerged as the champion after clocking a timing of 12.86 seconds in the C Division girls’ 100m final at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

Coming in second was Nur Ria Isabelle of Singapore Sports School (SSP) with a 13.11s effort. Elizabeth’s NYGH teammate, Bernice Liew, settled for bronze with 13.15s.

This was Elizabeth’s second gold medal of the championships after she won the 80m hurdles in a new championship record of 12.07s.

Elizabeth was the only athlete in the field to cover the 100 metres in under 13 seconds. The time was also her personal best and her first time going under 13 seconds. Her previous PB was the 13.08s she clocked in the semi-finals.

At the same time, Elizabeth’s timing makes her the second-fastest girl across all divisions, behind B Division winner Tanisha Moghe (12.63s) of Cedar Girls’ Secondary. The NYGH Secondary One student ran faster than the A Division girls’ winner, Raffles Institution’s Amirah Aljunied (12.87s).

Apart from Elizabeth this year, only three times in the last decade has the C Division girls’ 100m winner timed faster than the A Division girls’ winner – Liang Wei (2007), Shanti Pereira (2010) and Raine Oh (2015), who are all SSP alumni.

Elizabeth said, “I feel very elated with my performance in this race. I woud like to thank my coaches, Mr Tan Kim Seng and Ms Tan Yew Ling, for their support and guidance throughout this journey.

“I would also like to thank my family and friends for coming down to support me. The additional support given by my school, principal and teachers were indeed a great booster.”

The electronically-timed record for the C Division girls’ 100m is 12.74s, set by SSP alumna Nur Izlyn Bte Zaini in 2012.

Lim Joo Lee, then of Raffles Girls’ School, holds the hand-timed record of 12.20s set in 1993.
