Bishan Stadium, Friday, April 22, 2016 – Brandon Norton of Singapore Sports School overcame a rough start to finish first in the C Division Boys’ 800m with a timing of 2 minutes 11.43 seconds at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

The electronically-timed record for the event still stands at 02:03.76s, set by Victoria School alumnus Kannan Poobalan in 1997.

Ethan Tan of Hwa Chong Institution and Harieharan of Singapore Sports School came in second and third with timings of 02:13.95 and 02:14.86 respectively.

Amir Rusyaidi Osman of ACS(I) led at the start, increasing his speed to open up a small gap between him and the following pack.

He managed to hold on to his lead until the start of the second round, where he was overtaken by Ethan who tried to pull away. However, Ethan was followed by Brandon, who out-sprinted him in the last stretch to claim the gold.

When asked about his race, Brandon said, “The race was not how I expected to be and did not go according to plan. I did not manage to get the timing I wanted and it was three seconds off my personal best. However upon thinking, I am satisfied with my result considering I got boxed in at the start, and am proud that I still pushed on regardless.”

“I would like to thank my friends, who comforted me before the race telling me not to worry and just do my best, as well as my parents for their comfort and my coach for the pep talk,” he added.

Brandon will now focus on the upcoming 1500m final taking place next Monday, April 25.
