Bishan Stadium, Thursday, April 21, 2016 — Elizabeth Liau of CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School blazed past the competition to take home the C Division Girls’ 3000m gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships with a timing of 11 minutes 59.43 seconds.
Elizabeth also won the C Division Girls’ individual title at the 57th National Schools Cross Country Championships three weeks ago.
Caitlyn Yeo of St Nicholas Girls’ and Celeste Ang of Nanyang Girls’ High came in second and third with timings of 12:12.60 and 12:14.85 respectively.
The runners started off in a pack at the start, which slowly dispersed in the first lap. Elizabeth led from the start, putting a considerable distance between herself and the other runners by the second lap.
With three rounds left to go, Elizabeth remained in the lead, followed by Shawna Tay of Nan Hua High and Caitlyn who were racing neck and neck behind her. Celeste soon caught up with Shawna and overtook her leading into the final lap.
Elizabeth sped up in the final lap to come in a comfortable first, 100 metres ahead of the second runner. Caitlyn outsprinted Celeste in the last stretch to come in second, leaving Celeste to settle for third.
When asked about the race, Elizabeth said, “It was a tiring race, especially the last few parts. I gave my best for this race as I was trying to hit a sub 12 minute timing, and thankfully managed to.”
She added,” I would like thank my parents who support all my races, teachers, coaches, friends and my brother, who comes to support me even when he has a race on that day. All the best to the rest of my teammates, as well as my brother!”
Elizabeth will now focus on her 1500m final, which will take place on Monday, April 25.
