Bishan Stadium, Tuesday, April 19, 2016 — Kon Pei Ying of Hwa Chong Instituion (HCI) cleared a personal best height of 1.59 metres to clinch the A Division Girls’ high jump gold at the 57th National Schools Track and Field Championships.

Her HCI teammate Cheryl Lim and Naomi Ng of Victoria Junior College came in second and third respectively. Both cleared 1.40m, but Cheryl won the silver on countback.

This was Pei Ying’s third National Schools high jump gold in a row. In 2014, while representing Nanyang Girls’ High School, she came in first in the B Division with a 1.53m jump. Last year, she won the A Division event with her previous personal best of 1.58m.

Pei Ying secured the gold early in the competition. She subsequently cleared 1.56m on her second attempt, then went on to set her new personal best of 1.59m by clearing it on her final attempt.

She attempted to clear 1.62m thereafter but failed on all three tries.

“I’m quite happy for a new PB, shy of 1cm to 1.60m. I would like to thank my teammates and especially my coach, Ms Chan See Huey, for their support,” Pei Ying exclaimed.

When asked about her future goals, the HCI Year 6 student continued, “I guess I would like to clear 1.60m first and then I’ll see where I go from there.”

Pei Ying’s high jump gold will be valuable in HCI’s quest to retain their A Division Girls’ overall team title. Last year, they won the title by finishing 28 points above Victoria Junior College.

“I think every point counts, especially when it’s quite a close fight now. Hopefully, my win will help,” she remarked.
