PESEB, Wednesday, March 2, 2016 — After exchanging leads throughout the game, Outram Secondary (OSS) eventually prevailed to beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 11-9 in the National B Division Water Polo Championship.

Min Guan Lin (HCI #11) lead his team with three goals while Zander (OSS #10) and Jing Hao (OSS#2) also had three goals each.

Both teams played aggressive defenses and were quick to intercept each other’s passes. They matched each other and the score was tied at 2-2 with over a minute left in the 1st quarter.

A successful long-distance attempt by Jonathan Tan (HCI #6) gave HCI a 3-2 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter saw HCI making short passes to break Outram’s defense. This enabled them to score two more goals to widen the lead.

However, Outram caught on to their tactic and adapted to make it difficult for HCI to make passes.

Outram’s swift offense gave HCI some defending to do. Outram were able to to put four past the HCI goalkeeper to edge ahead by one goal (6-5) heading into half time.

An Outram lapse just 20 seconds into the 3rd quarter allowed HCI to tie it up at 6-6. Outram tightened up after that and were able to intercept quite a few passes.

Outram continued to capitalize on their swift offense and were able to score goal after goal. At the same time, Outram also made it difficult for HCI to get good looks at the net, and they led 10-7 at the end of the third quarter.

The 4th quarter saw the game reaching a stalemate as both teams turned up a notch in their defense. Outram were restricted to just one goal in the quarter.

HCI pressure made Outram careless with the ball and they capitalised to score two goals, but Outram held on to win.

Outram captain, Donovan Chooi (#3), said, “We did not really play to our standard but it was still a good game as we were able to come back. We are still getting used to the competition pressure but I think we have a good chance of reaching the Final.”
