OCBC Arena, Wednesday, January 27, 2016 — Mayflower Secondary beat Kent Ridge 19-3 in the South Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Almaz (#9) of Mayflower scored a game-high five points while Charyssa (#7) from Kent Ridge scored all three points for her team.

The game started out with both teams unable to score any points for the first six minutes. Players from both teams often ended up on to the ground to gain possession of the ball, resulting in rugby-scrum-like gameplay.

The first shot was eventually scored by Julie (#11) of Mayflower with just over three minutes to spare in the first quarter.

Charyssa (#7) of Kent Ridge responded with a free throw followed by a 2-point shot to give Kent Ridge a 3-2 lead.

However, Almaz (#9) of Mayflower scored a two-point basket and one free throw as well, bringing the score at the end of the first quarter to 5-3 in Mayflower’s favour.

In the 2nd quarter, Mayflower dominated possession, but they missed a lot of shots and could not pull away. With Mayflower’s strong defence, Kent Ridge were rarely able to gain possession of the ball. When they did gain possession, they attempted cross-court passes but those did not work out.

Mayflower led 9-3 at half-time.

Mayflower met with misfortune in the second half of the game when Jes (#15) and Julie (#11) suffered injuries in the 3rd and 4th quarters respectively and had to be substituted.

Despite the setback, Mayflower were able to keep up their strong defence and aggressive offence to win the game 19-3, keeping Kent Ridge scoreless for three quarters.

Captain of Mayflower, Julie (#11), felt that the team could’ve played better.

“It wasn’t our best performance but we did what we could and we’ve reached our target; it’s been a while since Mayflower has come this far,” beamed vice-captain Almaz (#9).
