Choa Chua Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 22, 2015 — Arissa Rashid of Nanyang Girls’ High clinched the 800m girls’ title with a 2:32.11 effort at the 56th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships.

Dunman High’s Levyn Wong came from far behind, overtaking her competitors at the home straight to eventually finish second. Bronze medallist, Noelle Chung, of Nanyang Girls’ High was 0.09s behind her, with a timing of 2:35.22.

Arissa and Clenyce Tan of Raffles Girls’ School fought for the lead in the first round. While Clenyce fell behind in the subsequent laps, Arissa held onto her lead till the end.

“Before the race, I was quite nervous but I had to calm myself down and just focus on my own race, to not get distracted by other competitors. I just tried to set my own pacing for the first round. In the second round, I just tried to kick at the last 200,” chimed Arissa.

Even though it was not her personal best, she said, “I’m still quite happy. It feels quite surreal to win the B Division 800m because I’m a year younger.”

The 15 year-old has been running since Primary 3. Arissa was the C Division girls’ 800m champion last year and also claimed the B Division girls’ 1500m title last Wednesday.

About her performance, silver medallist, Levyn Wong, said, “The race was competitive. I really gave my best. I didn’t want to go all-out at the first part so I went at a comfortable pace and just sprinted at the last part.”

Levyn did not compete last year due to an injury. She finished in fifth place two years ago in the C Division girls’ 800m event.
