Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 14, 2014 — Representing Singapore Sports School, Kugapriya set a new girls’ B Division 200m record to clinch the gold medal with a timing of 25.51 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

The girls’ B Division 400m champion, Nurul Natasha of Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary, bagged the silver medal with a timing of 26.63 seconds. Amirah Aljunied of CHIJ (Toa Payoh) finished third in 26.92s.

The previous B Division electronically-timed 200m record of 25.64s was set by Singapore Sports School alumna Eugenia Tan in 2012. The hand-timed mark stands at 25.5s, set in 1987 by Mona Kunalan.

The result is Kugapriya’s second consecutive B Division 200m title at the National Championships. She also won the C Division 200m title in 2012. In last year’s edition, the Sports School student clocked 25.79 seconds. “I feel very happy. I want to thank my coach, Ms Jenny and my friends for supporting me all the way. I also want to thank my mum for coming all the way here to watch me run,” commented Kugapriya.

Kugapriya’s new personal best met the qualifying marks for May’s Youth Olympic Games Asian Area Qualification (25.64s) as well as the Asian Junior Championships (25.73s) a month later.
