Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Thursday, April 10, 2014 — Ng Jia Yi of Changkat Changi Secondary clinched the girls’ B Division 400m hurdles gold medal with a timing of 1 minute 7.06 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.
Pan Xin-Min of Nanyang Girls’ High was second with a timing of 1:08.01, while Celeste Goh of Singapore Sports School finished third in 1:08.75. Both were personal bests.
This is Jia Yi’s first ever 400m hurdles event in the National Inter-School Track & Field Championships. “I feel very happy. It is the first time that I ever won in the nationals. I want to thank my coaches, my boyfriend and family members for supporting me all this while,” commented the 16-year-old.
The B Division 400m hurdles record is 1:03.86 and was set by Singapore Sports School alumna, T Piriyah, in 2008.
Jia Yi’s time is the seventh fastest in the history of this event and division at the Schools’ championships. Her personal best is 66.45s set at last month’s Junior championships. That qualified her for the Youth Olympic Games Asian Area Qualification in May, as well as June’s Asian Junior Championships.
