Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, March 26, 2014 — After dropping their first group game, Anglican High School (AHS) bounced back to beat Zhonghua Secondary (ZHS) 46–34 in the first round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Lydia Ong (ZHS #5) led all scorers with 23 points, while Clarice Tan (AHS #11) paced her team with 11 points.

The win leaves Anglican High joint-second in the group along with Anderson Secondary. Both teams have a 1–1 win–loss record. Anderson went down to Nanyang Girls’ High School 28–48 in the other game played today.

Zhonghua started the game off badly, racking up five fouls within four minutes. Anglican High capitalised on this by drawing even more fouls, going to the line multiple times. However, they were let down by poor shooting at the stripe, making only three of their eight attempts. Zhonghua’s offence found it difficult to get going, scoring only three points in the first quarter.

Anglican High played a high trap defence in the second quarter. It was initially successful, but defensive breakdowns in the paint area yielded easy baskets for Zhonghua. Chelsea Eng (AHS #6) put on a good shooting display in the quarter, hitting two three-pointers on her way to eight points.

The second half saw Anglican High extend their lead through fast breaks. Chermaine Lee (AHS #7) and Ng Qi Hui (AHS #10) combined for 10 points in the quarter. They were part of an 11–0 run which saw Anglican High extend the lead to 21 points.

The highlight of the game came in the same quarter. Koh Hwee Ching (AHS #14) and Navanee Lingam (AHS #12) produced a combination play that completely fooled the Zhonghua defence. Both players crossed each other near the paint area, as Navanee (AHS #12) flipped a no-look pass over her head to an open Hwee Ching (AHS #14) to score.

Anglican High only mustered four points in the final quarter. Fatigue started to set in their players, affecting their shots. However, they were able to hold out for the 46–34 win. This gives them a chance to qualify for the second round, as they are now tied with Anderson Secondary for second in the group.

Anglican High captain, Amelie Lim (#8), said, “It was a good win, because this means we are a step closer to round two. Our offence improved from the previous game. We also did slightly better on defence as well. For the next game, we have to make a better effort to get our heads into the game quicker. It will be tough against Nanyang Girls’, but we hope to win.”
