Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, March 26, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High School defeated Anderson Secondary 48–28 in the first round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Choo Jie Ying (Anderson #4) led all scorers with 14 points, while Lim Boon Yee (Nanyang #12) scored 11 points to lead her team.

Nanyang Girls’ now top Group P with a 2–0 win–loss record, while Anderson fall to 1–1. Both teams remain in contention to qualify for the second round of the championship. The final set of group games on April 3 will decide the qualifiers that emerge from the group.

Rachel Wong (Nanyang #10) got the ball rolling for Nanyang Girls’, pouring in five points in the first quarter. The team were sinking a high percentage of their shots early on. On defence, good anticipation by the Nanyang players led to easy steals, allowing them to convert on the other end. Jie Ying (Anderson #4) was the sole player who had any success on offence for her team, using her size in the paint to deliver eight points for her team.

Getting the ball into the post was a challenge for Anderson in the second quarter, as they found their entry passes denied by Nanyang Girls’ each time. This allowed Nanyang Girls’ to post a 9–0 run, extending their lead to 14 by the end of the period.

The second half saw Nanyang Girls’ display a strong defence to thwart any chance of an Anderson comeback. Their main tactic was to force the ball towards the corners and the baseline, denying easy shot attempts for Anderson. This proved to be successful as they managed to hold Anderson to only 12 points in the half. Despite their offence drying up in the second half, Nanyang Girls’ did enough on defence to ensure the win.

Boon Yee (Nanyang #12) made most of her baseline jumpers and even added a three-pointer for good measure.

Nanyang Girls’ finished the game with a 48–28 victory, improving their chances of qualifying for the second round. They next face Anglican High in their final group match on Thursday, April 3 at Clementi Sports Hall at 1:30pm.

Nanyang Girls’ captain, Sheryl Ng (#4), said, “Today was a really important win, as it relieves the pressure on us for the next game. We started off better than our previous game, so that was good for us going forward. We need to set up our offence better in the next game. We cannot underestimate Anglican High.”

Nanyang Girls’ top scorer, Lim Boon Yee (#12), added, “It was hard to score against Jie Ying (Anderson #4). She was pretty tall and she rejected me a few times. But I managed to find a way past her.”
