Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 6-7, 2013 – 14-year-old Jordan Chia won two of Singapore’s five gold medals at the 21st Under-14 and 15 International Little Athletics Championships.

Athletes from the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM), Western Australia Little Athletics Association (WALAA) and the Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) take part in this annual meet, which Malaysia and Singapore take turns to host.

Jordan, a Raffles Institution student, topped the boys’ under-14 discus (1kg) and shot put (4kg) fields in dominant fashion, with 11 of his 12 total throws good enough to win the gold medal.

His best throw of 16.08 metres in the shot put competition broke the championship record of 15.70m set by Malaysia’s Ong Chin Yong in 2008. It is also a new national under-15 record, bettering the 2007 mark set by Tan Zhi Hao by a single centimetre.

Jordan now owns the national under-15 marks in both these events. He had set the discus record of 51.54m at April’s National Schools Championships. In KL, his best throw of 47.22m dwarfed the competition by more than five metres.

Jay Choo of Singapore Sports School won a gold medal in the boys’ Under-15 200m hurdles (0.762m), winning in a fast time of 24.7 seconds. He added a silver medal in the 100m hurdles (0.762m), finishing half a second behind Malaysia’s Mohd Haimin Robert, who set a new championship record of 12.9s.

Jay’s schoolmate Kugapriyad d/o Chandran finished first in the girls’ Under-15 200m, clocking a time of 25.5s which was 0.2 seconds ahead of Western Australia’s Alanah Yukich. The latter had finished ahead of Kugapriyad in the 100m a day earlier, with the Singaporean clocking 12.5s.

Both of Kugapriyad’s times compared favourably with her electronically-timed personal bests of 25.79 and 12.71 respectively.

Middle-distance runner Nah Yi Xin led a 1-2 finish for Singapore in the girls’ under-15 1500m. The Cedar Girls’ Secondary student clocked a time of 5 minutes 29.0 seconds to win the gold medal, with Grace Ng of Sports School taking second place in 5:33.08s.

Singapore won 11 silver and 8 bronze medals, for a total haul of 24 medals. Hosts Malaysia led the medal tally with 35-33-22 (gold-silver-bronze), while Western Australia were second with 24-20-34.
