Choa Chu Kang Sports Complex, Monday, April 15, 2013 — In the 3,000 metres C Division final of the 54th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships 2013, a strong final 500m dash was what set Alicia Tung Rui Ling of Crescent Girls’ School apart from the rest. Covering the 3,000m in 12:08.17, Alicia bagged a gold to go with the silver medal from the 1,500m event where she clocked 5:28.58.

The record for the 3,000m event is 10:55.12 and was set by Chua Khai Leng, then of Hua Yi Secondary, in 2005.

Second and third place went to Kate Callon and Leah Fahy, respectively, from St. Joseph’s Institution International (SJII). Kate had a timing of 12:18.44 while Leah finished in 12:31.76.

Haney Khairunnisa Bte Mohd Nor and Joyceleen Yap of Cedar Girls’ Secondary were the early leaders in the race. With five rounds remaining, Chong Hui Xian of Jurong Secondary overtook Joyceleen to move into second place, just a few paces behind Haney. Felyn Toh Le Chun (#184) of Raffles Girls’ School moved into third place.

With 1,200m more to go, Felyn and Hui Xian tried to take the lead but their efforts proved futile as Kate and Leah soon caught up and overtook them. Alicia followed suit and overtook Hui Xian to be just behind the SJII duo.

With 500m to go, Alicia pushed herself and broke away to create a notable distance between herself and Kate. Both Kate and Leah picked up their pace but Alicia was only getting quicker and quicker.

In the final round, Alicia, Kate and Leah were all separated by distances of about 20 metres. There was no more overtaking and they settled for first, second and third place respectively.

After the race, Alicia said: “It was quite an okay race for me. It was tiring, but it paid off. I think my last 500 metres was good. However, I tripped a couple of times in my last two to three laps.”

Silve medalist Kate found the race to be fun but tiring. “I had to give it my all to run. I tried to keep up (with Alicia). I had a good pace, but I need to work on having a good finishing,” said Kate, who set a new personal best.

Having bettered her own personal best as well, Leah was happy that she did not start out too fast. “She (Alicia) had the best qualifying timing. I need to keep practicing my runs so that it will not be that hard for me near the end of the race,” Leah said.
