Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 4, 2012 — Heng Yu Jie added the B Division 3000 metres title to his cross country win when he out-sprinted his opponents in the final lap at the 53rd National Schools’ Track and Field Championships.

The Catholic High School athlete, who also won the 3000m race last year, was pitted against strong opponents like Venuraam S/O Selvan and Marcus Ng of Victoria School this time. Venuraam had won the 2000m Steeplechase final a day earlier while Marcus Ng finished second to Yu Jie in the recently concluded National Schools Cross Country Championships.

The race started with Catholic High’s Lim Jia De setting the early pace in wet conditions. The rest of the pack chose to stay some distance behind him in the first few rounds.

However, Jia De failed to keep his lead as Venuraam and Marcus closed the gap and made a final sprint in the last round. Yu Jie’s finishing kick saw him overtake Venuraam at the 200m bend to defend his 3000m title.

Venuraam finished a close two seconds behind Yu Jie while Marcus completed the race in third place.
