Friday, September 17, 2010 — Darren Choy and Quah Ting Wen received the Overall Best School Boy and School Girl awards respectively at the 40th National Colours Award Presentation.

Darren, from the Singapore Sports School, won the World Byte Championships in 2010 and 2009 while Ting Wen, from Raffles Institution, won five gold medals at the 2009 SEA Games.

Darren and Ting Wen were chosen from a field of student athletes who received the Best School Boy and Best School Girl awards for their respective sports. This is a new award given out by the Singapore School Sports Council (SSSC).

660 students from 104 schools were awarded the National School Colours Award at the ceremony. Of these, 153 students received the National or Special Colours Award for representing Singapore at the Youth Olympic Games. 1,262 students were also presented with the Zone Colours Award for their performance at the zonal level.

The National Colours Award is given annually to recognise students’ contributions in representing the Singapore School Team and their outstanding achievements in sports and games within the official SSSC Sporting Calendar. Since 2004, the Special Colours Award has been given to students who represent Singapore in sports not within the official calendar.

The National Inter-School Championships from this year is now known as the National School Games. The Games this year comprised of 27 sports and involved 33,000 athletes from 183 schools.

A virtual Games flame was lit at the games’ opening ceremony for the first time and kept burning for 211 days of inter-school competitions. In conjunction with the award presentation, the 2010 NSG was brought to a close with the extinguishing of the Games flame.
