VJC Field, Thursday, April 2, 2009 – Victoria Junior College beat Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) 1-0 to register a second win in their A Division Football Championship campaign.
Their first win came courtesy of a 6-1 demolition of Yishun Junior College and expectations were set for another goal feast against unfancied ACS(I).
A foul by Shoban Kumar (ACS(I), #3) on Mohd Asyraf (VJC, #11) gave VJC a free kick just at the edge of the box. Having scored a hat-trick against Yishun, with one of his goals coming from a free kick, it was no surprise that Alex Bui (VJC, #10) stepped up again. His shot took a deflection off Anthony Tan (ACS(I), #10) in the ACS(I) wall and hit the back of the net, leaving ACS(I) keeper Esmond Loke flatfooted.
With only eight minutes gone, many of the VJC supporters were perhaps hoping for another flood of goals but that was it for the day.
It wasn’t for lack of trying though. VJC spent most of their time in the ACS(I) half and the number of times VJC keeper Ifwat Wafiy touched the ball could be counted on one hand.
In the second half, Anders Aplin (VJC, #9) was introduced to add more bite into the attack but he was responsible for the miss of the game when he somehow headed the ball out a metre from an open goal when it seemed easier to score.
Alex also went close with a classic downward header that beat the ACS(I) keeper but bounced agonisingly off the crossbar for VJC supporters. Alex then perfectly executed a bicycle kick that went just wide to sum up the game of misses for VJC.
Against minimal opposition that could only muster a single shot on target, the 1-0 victory will be disappointing for VJC fans. However, VJC, who lost to Meridian Junior College last year in the A Division final, look good enough for a spot in the semi-finals at least, with their composed passing play and fitness.
