Jurong West Sports Complex, Monday, March 23, 2009 – Dunman Secondary beat Seng Kang Secondary 56-39 to win their first Group B National Basketball Championship game.

Despite the win, Dunman captain Chng Yong wasn’t exactly satisfied.

“We didn’t play to expectation. We took the game too lightly but we should make the second round,” he said after the game.

I expect New Town to be a tougher fight,” said teammate Adam Goh. “But we’ll see how it goes.”

In a girls’ Group B game, Unity Secondary beat Yuying Secondary 67-64 in a close game that went down to the wire.

Poor free throw shooting proved the undoing of Yuying, a point addressed by Teo Siang Yang, their coach and teacher-in-charge.

“They (Unity) were able to shoot free throws better than us. Usually our free throw shooting percentage is 80% but today’s it’s about 30%. We had the most free throws today also the most misses,” said Mr. Teo.

Defending B Division champions Raffles Girls’ School suffered a setback when key player Hannah Ng went down with a back injury suffered in last week’s all-star game. A bad foul left Hannah unable to bend her back, leaving RGS coach Guangyi to wait until the last minute before deciding his lineup.

“She is worth 20 points a game,” said coach Guangyi.

RGS will take on Woodgrove Secondary on Wednesday, March 25th, at Jurong West Sports Complex. Tip off time is 2.45pm.
